Why You Need Renters Insurance

6/26/2020 (Permalink)

Storms and other bad weather can occur during any time of the year, not just storm season. Here are several reasons to consider getting a renter’s insurance policy to protect yourself.

While over 90% of homeowners have an insurance policy on their home, less than 40% of renters have renter’s insurance. Many times, a landlord or property owner only carries insurance on the structure of the property itself, and not what is inside. Because of this, your landlord’s property insurance will not help you if any of your belongings in the home are damaged.

Bad weather can strike at any time, which can cause flooding or other damage to your home and belongings inside. Talk to your landlord to find out what kind of insurance they have on the property you are renting, and what it covers. If, in fact, their insurance does not cover items inside the home, contact an insurance agent to speak with them about the best type of coverage.

It is important to have your owner renter insurance because:

  • A basic renters insurance plan will reimburse you for person belongings that are damaged or stolen.
  • You are covered for damages caused by fire and flood.
  • If the property you are renting is severely damaged and no longer livable, your policy can help you pay for other living arrangements.

Although you do not own the home you are living in, renters should still carry their own insurance policy. This will give you the same protections and will be beneficial in the event of an emergency, like a fire, storm, flood. We recommend that you contact your insurance agent to discuss options that are available to you. You may be surprised to learn how affordable it is – some policies are as low as $12 a month.
