Frozen Temperatures & Freezing Precipitation Preparedness

1/21/2021 (Permalink)

Avoid frozen pipes.

North Carolina still has several months where the temperatures will most likely go below freezing. Frozen water can cause severe damage to homes and businesses. Water is a necessity, however when it freezes it expands and can cause metal and plastic to expand and to break.

Common problems with pipes that are prone to freeze are:

  • Pipes which run against outside walls and have little or no insulation
  • Pipes exposed to severe cold, such as swimming pool supply lines, outdoor hose bibs, and water sprinkler lines.
  • Water supply pipes in unheated interior areas such as attics, garages, crawl spaces, basements, or kitchen cabinets.

Here are Several Ways to Prevent Frozen Pipes

  • Keep your thermostat set at the same temperature day and night.
  • If you have supply lines in your garage, keep the doors closed.
  • Open bathroom and kitchen cabinets to allow warm air to circulate around your plumbing if they are prone to freeze
  • Consider setting your temperature at 55* if you are going to be away from your home during a cold snap.
  • You can let cold water drip from faucets which have exposed pipes.

We hope these tips will help you avoid frozen pipes. But, if you end up with damage from frozen temperatures – act quickly and call SERVPRO of Roanoke Rapids. And remember, frozen pipes cause a lot of damage to your property quickly and our trained team will be there to help you.
